The Springfield Sun has an immediate opening for an Editor. This position is a "sleeves rolled up" editor position where the editor is also the lead writer, photographer and paginator and occasionally customer service representative. The Sun is a 3,700 circulation weekly newspaper in Washington County in central Kentucky, 45 minutes from Lexington and Louisville.  The newspaper earned first place for General Excellence in the Kentucky Press Association contest for 2012 and 2014.  The Sun has been providing coverage to the community since 1892.   • Degree in journalism or related field with a minimum of 2 years' newsroom experience; supervisory experience helpful
  • Ability to coach, organize, and develop staff
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to utilize Internet and incorporate newspaper website
  • Ability to work well with other departments as well as outside customers
  • Possess and demonstrate solid news judgment skills
  • Proven initiative and the ability to direct day-to-day news operations
  • Working knowledge of overall newspaper production process
  • Strong editing, writing, designing and pagination skills
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word is preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot computer problems is also helpful
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends to cover events
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to assignments and a valid driver's license


  • Supervise staff writer/sports writer and occasional stringers
  • Write news and features for weekly paper as well as special sections
  • Take digital photos for publication
  • Edit and proofread submitted as well as staff written copy
  • Handle front page design and layout as well as layout for inside pages and pagination
  • Write weekly editorial and column
  • Update website
  • Be active in the community and represent the newspaper in community and civic activities

 WORK SCHEDULE:  This is an exempt position. Variable days and hours as needed. Occasional night and weekend work to be expected.
