The News-Democrat, The News-Herald and The Trimble Banner, Landmark Community Newspapers, LLC, properties, are seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of regional editor that the three newspapers will share. The regional editor is responsible for leading all aspects of the newsroom for the three newspapers with an operating philosophy that values coaching, mentoring and team management.  Regional duties include weekly meetings with the regional editorial staff and determining assignments, use of freelancers and prioritizing coverage strategy. The regional editor will be based at the Carrollton newspaper office.

The News-Democrat is a community newspaper covering Carroll County, Ky., just off Interstate 71 halfway between Louisville, Ky. and Cincinnati, Ohio. Owen County adjoins to the east and includes the county seat of Owenton. Trimble County adjoins Carroll to the west and includes the cities of Bedford and Milton. Both communities are rural and on the banks of the Ohio River. Carroll County has a strong industrial base and an active tourism industry. QUALFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or similar field
  • Minimum of five years' experience in the newspaper business with experience in managing people is preferred.
  • Demonstrated high ethical conduct and standards.
  • Solid writing (hard news, opinion, and features), researching, editing and photography are musts
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy plus a proficient knowledge of AP styles is necessary
  • Strong electronic page design skills (InDesign CS6 on Macs)
  • Creativeness and the ability to meet deadlines is imperative
  • Working knowledge of the Internet, web-based content and social media
  • Good news judgement along with good organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership skills to successfully coach and mentor editorial staff
  • Ability to self-direct, self-manage, and self-guide is a must
  • Availability to cover events that will occur on weekends and evenings
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Planning and leading the news team's effort in producing print and online products and special sections, including making assignments, story and photo selection, pre and post editing and pagination while meeting all printing and distributing deadlines.
  • Plan weekly content, including assigning stories/photo shoots to stringers/freelancers where appropriate
  • Write stories, editorials, and columns, edit copy, take photographs and paginate news and community pages and lead by example in covering any news story needed
  • Coach and develop staff
  • Ensure Social Media platforms are kept updated on a daily basis
  • Contribute to the news product with stories, columns, and photos
  • Edit copy for newspaper issues and special sections
  • Be active in the community and represent the newspaper in community and civic activities
  • Delighting internal and external customers.
