The Brunswick Beacon is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 10,000. The paper is based in Shallotte, NC, and serves Brunswick County. The area is relatively rural and features miles of beautiful beaches, countless golf courses and world-class saltwater fishing. Myrtle Beach. S.C. and Wilmington, N.C. each about 30 miles from Shallotte offer an array of cultural activities including museums, live entertainment and nightlife. The newspaper earned first place for General Excellence in the North Carolina Press Association contest and has been honored repeatedly by LCNI and the National Newspaper Association.

The news page designer position is responsible for layout and production of the weekly newspaper and additional special sections.

Qualifications:

  • Journalism or graphic design degree or minimum of one year of experience working for a weekly, multi-weekly or daily newspaper or similar graphic design career experience is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in using InDesign and Photoshop and other computer programs essential to the production of a weekly newspaper. Knowledge of Illustrator a plus.
  • Be able to work up to 29-hour weeks, including some nights. Tuesday nights mandatory.
  • Must have a high energy level and be self-motivated.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, news or feature writing, copy-editing and photography a plus.
  • Must be well-organized and able to work under constant pressure of deadlines.
  • Be willing to work with others to develop high quality, engaging news pages and special sections.
  • Be willing to learn the company's online content management system.

Essential Functions:

  • Design news pages for all three news sections of the paper weekly.
  • Create eye-catching designs using stories, graphics and/or photos to make it easy for readers to navigate the newspaper.
  • Design pages for special sections, including covers.
  • Process digital photographs.
  • Be able to meet established deadlines of the newspaper.
  • Archive copy, pages and photos after use.
  • Work with staff writers to effectively plan news packages and necessary art.
  • Function effectively as a member of a news team.
