The News-Enterprise, an aggressive daily newspaper in Hardin County, Ky., about 40 miles south of Louisville, is accepting applications for a General Assignment Reporter in an interesting, diverse population area of more than 105,000 that includes Fort Knox. This non-exempt hourly position involves writing for The News-Enterprise. The successful candidate will be a hard-charger who can report and write effectively on deadline. The successful candidate will enjoy writing about people and their daily lives, be a quick-study and understand that a newspaper's goal is to respond to the needs and preferences of readers in the communities it serves.   • Strong communication, organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to write accurate, effective and engaging stories on deadline when necessary
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Proficiency in using computers to write and the Internet to research
  • Familiarity with requirements of photojournalism and ability to take publication quality images with a digital camera
  • Strong initiative
  • Adaptable
  • Available for evening and weekend work as scheduled
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Hardin County community is helpful
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license

Essential Functions:

  • Develop daily and long-range story and photograph ideas
  • Write compelling, comprehensive, fact-filled stories on deadline and put readers first by avoiding clichs and arcane language
  • Establish and nurture sources building trust through effective interviewing and reliable accuracy
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to serving readers
  • Work with photographers to develop ideas for illustrating stories
  • Participate in team meetings and decisions

Schedule: 42-hour schedule per week including some evenings and part of weekend rotation coverage
