The LaRue County Herald News, a weekly newspaper publishing on Wednesday with over 4,500 circulation, has an immediate opening for a Reporter/Page Designer. We are located in LaRue County, Kentucky, the home of Abraham Lincoln's birthplace. The Reporter/Page Designer's duties will include reporting, writing, photography and page design of local news in coordination with the Editor.  Qualifications

  • Practical journalism experience preferred, including copy editing, reporting, design and pagination
  • Proficiency in using InDesign for page layout
  • Proficiency in using Photoshop
  • Strong grammar, spelling, writing, interviewing and researching skills required
  • Strong communication, organization and time management skills
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment; produce, on average, two stories a day; meet frequent deadlines
  • Display strong computer skills
  • Ability to work some night and weekend shifts
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is required

Essential Functions

  • Write accurate, compelling and balanced stories meeting required deadlines
  • Cover local events, school board meetings and other activities, as well as write feature stories
  • Help maintain online content for www.laruecountyherald.com
  • Provide back-up for in-house office responsibilities, answering phones and waiting on customers
  • Proofread pages on production day
  • Practice fair and balanced reporting, check facts, spelling, grammar and sources
  • Set up interviews
  • Lay out pages using InDesign

 Work Schedule 

40-hour work week with some night and weekend shifts
