Advertising Sales Representative

Rockport, Indiana

The Spencer County Journal-Democrat, a 1,900-circulation weekly newspaper located in Spencer County and Rockport, IN, is seeking an advertising sales representative. The successful candidate will call on a list of existing accounts as well as make calls on non-advertisers for its print publications and newspaper website: www.spencercountyjournal.com. In addition to the weekly newspaper, the advertising sales representative will handle advertising for Lincoln's Country, a 9,000 circulation shopper in Spencer County, as well as manage and place advertising in sister publications The Perry County News and Mount Vernon Democrat. All three newspapers are part of the News Publishing Company, a Landmark Community Newspapers property. Qualifications:

  • Sales experience, with a proven track record, is necessary
  • College education preferred
  • Self-motivated with good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement sales presentations
  • Commitment to growing revenue and providing exceptional customer service
  • Strong listening, written and oral communication skills
  • Must be resilient to overcome objections
  • Must be computer proficient, including use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Willing to work in a team environment
  • Must possess initiative, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to understand and live with a deadline driven business
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license to make sales calls

Essential Functions:

  • Service customers from an assigned account list
  • Maintain advertiser and customer confidentiality
  • Develop and organize a list of potential new clients; find leads from surrounding area newspapers, competitive media and the advertising manager
  • Meet or exceed monthly sales goals
  • Attend and participate in weekly sales meetings
  • Assist walk-in and call-in advertising customers
  • Meet deadlines for ad sales, scheduling and proofing
  • Input ad information into computer system to produce run list for each issue of the paper and shopper
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service
  • Project a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Help collect delinquent customer accounts

Work Schedule:

This is an exempt position, generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but will also consider a qualified person interested in working 3-4 days per week. Approximately 75 percent of the time will be spent calling on accounts out of the office. This position reports to the News Publishing Company Advertising Manager.
