 Production Manager

The Roane County News, a tri-weekly newspaper in Kingston, Tenn., has an immediate opening for a Production Manager to effectively lead the day-to-day operations for a production printing plant, including pre-press, press and post-press departments.  The press department includes a 9-unit Goss Community Press that includes two- two highs and a three into one color lead feeding into a single folder. This person is responsible for all production costs, quality, inventory control, shipping and receiving and staffing of the production plant. The production manager is a key leader of the newspaper operation and a member of the company's leadership team.  Kingston is 30 miles west of Knoxville, Tenn. Qualifications:

  • Five or more years' experience in a management/lead role, preferably in a newspaper production environment
  • 3+ years press experience, printing a variety of web sizes and formats
  • Ability to perform basic math
  • Ability to operate a computer using Word and Excel
  • Effective planning, organizing and analytical skills
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Ability to properly operate tow/clamp truck
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and climb up and down stacked press units
  • Proven commitment to quality output and customer service

 Essential Functions:

  • Produce print and packaging jobs of the highest quality main newspaper, ancillary products such as targeted, niche and total market coverage publications as well as commercial printing, including other community weekly newspapers on deadline
  • Lead the production teams to achieve company and department goals
  • Manage print and packaging schedules for greater efficiency and productivity
  • Manage newsprint to achieve monthly and annual consumption and waste goals
  • Work collaboratively with production and other department managers to streamline processes using new technology and process improvements or greater productivity and reduced costs
  • Identify ways to achieve operational goals in the face of rapidly changing business conditions
  • Plan for the current and future needs of the facility and operations through the annual and monthly budget and planning process
  • Seek and manage profitable commercial printing contracts to better utilize our assets and increase productivity
  • Lead maintenance programs on all equipment and building grounds and ensure proper maintenance records documentation
  • Oversee and ensure a clean, safe work environment
  • Operate press for external and internal print customer jobs
  • Ensure quality output and excellent customer service
  • Safely operate fork and clamp truck

 Work Schedule:  Work schedule is Sunday-Thursday.
