The Morgan County News has an immediate opening for the position of editor. The Morgan County News is a weekly newspaper publishing on Wednesdays, with circulation of about 3,000. It is located in the county seat of Wartburg, Tenn., on the Cumberland Plateau near Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Frozenhead State Park and the Obed Wild and Scenic River. The newspaper offers a competitive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) and paid time off benefits. The Morgan County News can also be found online at www.morgancountynews.net.

The editor directs day-to-day editorial operations, covering news, shooting pictures and laying out pages. The newspaper also has a reporter whose primary duties are to cover sports. The Morgan County News editor reports to the editor of the Roane County News, a sister tri-weekly newspaper in an adjoining county.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • Three years of newspaper experience or similar writing experience
  • Strong skills in writing, researching, interviewing, editing and photography
  • Good news judgment with a sense of timely reporting
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy; proficient knowledge of AP style
  • Proficient in electronic page design, preferably InDesign
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Working knowledge of Internet, web-based content, social media, Facebook
  • Valid driver's license

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Hands-on writing, editing, shooting video, photography and paginating for the news department
  • Develop and carry out plans for editorial, opinion pages, special sections and website content
  • Show commitment to quality by continuously improving content and packaging
  • Have timely interaction with the public, readers and non-readers about newspaper coverage
  • Meet deadlines for all products
  • Have active involvement in the community and build key source contacts
  • Promote the newspaper through social media, such as Facebook
  • Actively work with Roane County sister newspaper to coordinate and plan news coverage
