The Los Alamos Monitor, a Landmark Community Newspapers, LLC property, is seeking qualified and professionally successful candidates for the position of reporter/page designer. The Los Alamos Monitor is a tri-weekly community newspaper located in Los Alamos, New Mexico, approximately 30 miles northwest of Santa Fe. It also publishes monthly special sections and other ancillary publications. There is also a growing emphasis on breaking news and cross-promoting the multimedia aspects on its web site, www.lamonitor.com.

The position will require someone who is able to produce accurate, timely, well-written and engaging general assignment articles as assigned on deadline as well as edit and lay out compelling print pages and online presentations. This is a full-time position (40 hours) that reports directly to the editor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism preferred
  • Minimum of three years newspaper experience
  • Minimum of three years writing, editing and layout experience
  • Proficient InDesign software user
  • Good photography skills and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Good spelling and grammar skills along with knowledge of AP style and libel law
  • Excellent pagination/design skills, copy editing and organization skills
  • Commitment to effective multi-media presentation of news and features.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends to cover assignments

Essential Functions:

  • Cover general assignment beat, events, features and topics as assigned.
  • Work quickly under deadline and produce pages that feature strong design.
  • Assist in producing special sections and specialty publications.
  • Take photos, shoot video and use social media to promote the newspaper.
  • Handle website maintenance, general design and production tasks related to the news.
  • Effectively and professionally represent the company in community organizations and activities.
