The Kentucky Standard, an award-winning tri-weekly newspaper covering the 2012 Most Beautiful Small Town in America and longtime Bourbon Capital of the World, is seeking a presentation editor to join its newsroom.

The ideal candidate will be detail oriented whether they are editing a reporter's copy, rewriting a press release or laying out a news page. This position requires leadership ability to help manage the production cycle of the regular paper, as well as act as editor of frequent special publications, and help coordinate reporters, photographers and contributors. The position often acts as a delegated back-up to the editor for making newsroom decisions. This position reports to the editor.

The Kentucky Standard was founded in 1901 and covers Bardstown and Nelson County, Kentucky, about 45 minutes southeast from Louisville. It publishes on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and has a circulation of 7,000. For the past six years, The Standard has won first place in general excellence in The Kentucky Press Association's annual journalism competition, making it one of the state's top multi-frequency newspapers with a reputation for top-notch investigative and breaking news coverage.

In order to be considered for the position, candidates will be required to submit a portfolio of past design work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Practical journalism experience preferred, including copy editing, design and pagination
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Will have three years of experience in newspaper or a deadline-oriented publication
  • Good grammar, spelling and punctuation required
  • Ability to work well with other departments and employees, to include PLG News 13, Standard Communications' cable television operation, with a commitment to team play
  • Working knowledge and interest in managing social media
  • Proven ability to act decisively and accurately in a fast-paced team work environment that requires handling of multiple tasks
  • Proficient in using InDesign, Photoshop and other computer programs essential for pagination and design of the printed newspaper
  • Strong communication, organization and time-management skills
  • Familiarity with AP Stylebook and demonstrated knowledge of grammar and spelling
  • Basic experience and knowledge of HTML and other web coding languages

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with reporters to effectively coordinate news and sports packages with necessary art
  • Use effective application of graphics and/or photos to enhance reader navigation of the newspaper
  • Design multiple pages effectively in deadline situation using Adobe InDesign
  • Process photographs for print and online display using Adobe Photoshop
  • Summarize stories in compelling, informative and accurate headlines that interest readers
  • Assist the editor in managing the production process of the printed newspaper
  • Manage and coordinate content for special sections and design, including covers
  • Help maintain online content for www.kystandard.com

Work Schedule:

Hourly pay rate for 40 hours per week.  Tuesday-Friday and Saturday mornings.  Some nights, weekdays and additional weekend work may be necessary.
