MetroWest Newspapers is seeking qualified candidates for the position of General Manager/Editor. MetroWest Newspapers is a group of three paid weekly publications and a free distribution shopper in Brighton, Colorado, in the Denver-metro area. The newspapers have circulation of up to 3,000, the shopper 8,000 and publish Wednesday with associated daily and weekly updates of the associated websites (www.thebrightonblade.com, www.ftluptonpress.com, www.commercecitysentinel.com).

The General Manager/Editor is responsible for leading all day-to-day aspects of the newspaper with an operating philosophy that values coaching, mentoring and strong business discipline.  Achieving operational goals and objectives related to news and business results within the print and online components of the company is paramount.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in journalism or similar field is required
  • A minimum of five years' experience in the newspaper business with experience in managing people is preferred
  • Solid writing (hard news, opinion, and features), researching, editing and photography are musts
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation and accuracy plus a proficient knowledge of AP style is necessary
  • Strong electronic page design skills (InDesign CS6 on Macs)
  • Working knowledge of the Internet, web-based content and social media
  • Good news judgment along with good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to quality (to improve content, presentation and packaging of the news products)
  • Creativeness and the ability to meet deadlines is imperative
  • Ability to firmly manage and instruct others
  • An understanding of financial statements and of day-to-day business functions

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Achieve goals for the newspaper that include quality articles, the ability to investigate hot topics and achieving financial goals
  • Lead all day-to-day aspects of the newsroom
  • Write editorials or columns and lead by example by covering any news story needed
  • Design and layout pages
  • Load stories and photos onto the websites
  • Meet printing plant deadlines on weekly basis and for special publications
  • Be visible in the community and reside or be willing to relocate to Adams County
  • Maintain an open door to the community of readers and non-readers about newspaper coverage
  • Attend after hours events that include weekends and evenings while also being willing to report the news
