The Sentinel-News has an opening for a Staff Reporter. The paper is a twice-weekly publication (Wed./Fri.) with a Tuesday TMC product and also publishes numerous special sections. The job includes covering beats ranging from education to police and local governments to features, business and analytical stories. Covering community events is a must, and some weekend work will be required. Capable candidates will have a working knowledge of cameras and the ability to take photos while covering meetings, events and breaking news.  Reporters must be capable of building relationships with sources to ensure the flow of information, and are responsible for the use of social media and loading stories and information onto The Sentinel-News website. A typical issue will see reporters filing three to five stories.

The ideal candidate will have experience with InDesign and Photoshop and be comfortable with a variety of programs including Microsoft Office. The successful applicant must be a strong writer, have the ability to work in a self-paced atmosphere and as a member of a team and be a stickler for accuracy.   • Good organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to meet established deadlines
  • Extensive knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator a plus
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, AP style and libel law
  • Must be available for occasional night and weekend duties
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license to cover assignments


  • Compile and organize information for stories, using both interviews and other sources for information
  • Develop relationships with sources on beats to facilitate a flow of information
  • Load stories and photos to The Sentinel-News website
  • Use InDesign to help lay out pages
  • Contribute and help write and design special sections
  • Take initiative to pursue opportunities
  • Meet established deadlines of the newspaper
  • Cover occasional night and weekend duties
  • Function effectively as member of news team
  • Serve as a backup for other members of the news team
