Sports Editor

The Sentinel-News has an opening for a sports editor. The paper is a twice-weekly publication (Wed./Fri.), with a Tuesday TMC product, which also publishes numerous special sections. The job includes writing stories, related photography, paginating sports pages and loading sports stories and pictures on The Sentinel-News website. The successful applicant must be a strong writer, a good photographer, familiar with a broad range of prep sports and be a stickler for accuracy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good writing and interviewing skills
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Good organization and time-management skills
  • Good photography skills and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, AP style and libel law
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Write a mixture of crisp, accurate and compelling game and feature stories
  • Develop relationships with area coaches to facilitate a flow of information
  • Shoot clear and compelling photos
  • Design and lay out weekly sports pages and other pages as needed
  • Load stories and photos onto The Sentinel-News website
  • Write copy and lay out sports preview sections, as well as contribute to other special sections
  • Serve as a backup for other members of the news team
  • Cover assignments and two high school sports programs with timely stories and photos
  • Take initiative to pursue news/feature/photo opportunities
  • Be able to meet established deadlines of the newspaper
  • Be available for night and weekend games coverage
  • Function effectively as member of news team
