The LaFollette Press, an award-winning weekly newspaper in LaFollette, TN, is seeking a reporter. This person is responsible for covering several beats as well as handling general assignment and feature stories along with photography duties. Located in a growing community, the newspaper is about 35 miles north of Knoxville, TN. The LaFollette Press is one of the oldest weekly newspapers in the state. Nearby is Norris Lake, one of the best recreational lakes in the South. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Good writing, researching and interviewing skills
  • Good grammar, spelling, and punctuation required
  • Competency in photography, Photoshop
  • Commitment to quality in all aspects, from news coverage to design
  • Good organization and time management skills; must be able to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work well with other departments and employees
  • Knowledge and interest in the Internet
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license to travel to assignments

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Write news, features, and columns as assigned. Duties may also include some spot sports coverage.
  • Take photographs (news, features, business/community) as assigned and to accompany news stories.
  • Update and produce copy, photos, and slideshows for the Web site.
  • Produce multi-media format stories, photos with video and audio for the Web site.
  • Use InDesign CS6 to paginate select news and features pages.
  • Cover assigned beats; will include attending meetings at nights and covering spot news.
  • Develop/write features and news for special publications, promotions.
  • Develop story ideas relevant to the local community.
  • Ensure accuracy and objectivity in all news reporting.
  • Participate in team and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as positive liaison with the public.

RELATIONSHIPS/WORK SCHEDULE: 40-hour position with some evening and weekend work required. There is a residency requirement. Reports to Editor.
