The Los Alamos Monitor has an opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) staff writer/page designer. The tri-weekly paper publishes each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and publishes numerous special sections. Los Alamos, New Mexico, is located about 35 miles east of Santa Fe, on the Pajarito Plateau. This fascinating, science-centric community was the birthplace of the atomic bomb during World War II. The town is now bustling with a lively history and arts community, a national laboratory and is central to three national parks. An ideal reporter for our community would be interested in being a part of our team and would be interested in engaging in a variety of news topics and feature writing.

The successful applicant will be a multi-talented writer, photographer and paginator/page designer who is dedicated to excelling at local coverage, identifying and producing enterprise stories, and contributing to special sections. Must be organized, deadline-conscious and a stickler for accuracy and fairness. This person reports to the editor. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent experience
  • Strong writing, editing, photography and pagination skills
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft software required
  • Ability to properly use a digital camera
  • Multimedia experience
  • Time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Must be an organized self-starter who can communicate well
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics and legal/libel knowledge
  • Professional experience, and/or mastery of AP style and grammar
  • Ability to meet and communicate well with the public on newspaper and community issues
  • Ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license

    Essential functions:
  • Cover assigned beats and produce accurate, timely news articles
  • Develop leads and story ideas without much assistance
  • Cover breaking news, public safety, education
  • Develop and produce enterprise news and features
  • Provide stories and photographs for each issue and special section
  • Design pages using InDesign
