The Roane County News, a 5,800-circulation tri-weekly newspaper in Kingston, Tenn., is seeking a full-time reporter/page designer to join the news staff. This person's duties will include reporting, writing, photography and page design of local news in coordination with the Editor.  This person will generally work Monday through Friday, although approximately one weekend a month will be required. Roane County, with a population of about 53,000, is located 20 minutes from Knoxville, one of Tennessee's largest metro areas. Watts Bar Lake is at the center of this community, and wealthy retirees are changing the demographic of this traditionally rural community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent experience, including copy editing, reporting, design and pagination
  • Proficiency in using InDesign for page layout
  • Proficiency in using Photoshop
  • Good writing, researching and interviewing skills required
  • Competency in AP style with good grammar, spelling and punctuation skills
  • Strong communication, organization and time management skills
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment; produce, on average, two stories a day; meet frequent deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work some night and weekend shifts
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is required

Essential Functions

  • Write compelling, accurate, and timely news and information features for publications and special sections of the newspaper
  • Edit, proofread and prepare for pagination all individually produced and submitted content
  • Design and lay out the newspaper with an eye for circulation marketing and net paid growth
  • Update news and information for publication on the newspaper's website
  • Actively participate in various community functions and events as assigned

 Work Schedule 

  • 40-hour work week with some night and weekend shifts
